Book Review - "Beyond Belief" by Josh Hamilton

!: Book Review - "Beyond Belief" by Josh Hamilton

Josh Hamilton is a true success story. He has had it all, hit rock bottom, and now he is truly back at the top of the mountain. As a boy, he became interested in baseball at a very early age, and was so good at the game that he was placed in much older leagues before he was even ten years old. He had such a strong arm and powerful swing that he was thought to be a danger to the boys his own age that he played little league baseball with.

As he became older, he carried on the strong morals that his parents instilled in him while still a young boy. He was taught that family is the most important thing in life and found joy in staying home on nights when his friends were out risking trouble. He entered high school and began to realize immediately that he had major league potential and made it his goal to reach the big leagues. His dreams came true when he graduated high school and was signed number one in the major league draft, accepting an offer and signing bonus of over four million dollars.

Hamilton's transition to stardom and becoming a man was awkward. His parents followed him through the minor leagues to make sure he did get into trouble and some of his teammates and coaches found this strange. He was sheltered all of his life, and now at his job, they were still sheltering him.

When his parents finally gave him freedom, Hamilton began to exhibit questionable behavior. He got over a dozen tattoos within a short period of time and started to experiment with drugs with the men who gave him his tattoos. Hamilton hit a slippery slope and began doing more and more drugs. Part of it was the feeling of the drugs, but the drugs also took his mind of back pains he was experiencing from a car accident.

Josh Hamilton eventually started hanging out with the wrong crowds. He started becoming paranoid about buying drugs and spending enormous sums of money to gain access to hard drugs. He passed out in random trailers and blacked out on many occasions due to the large amounts of drugs he was consuming, but always had the love of family and the natural talent in baseball to bring him back into the light.

He eventually went to his grandmother's house in the middle of the night, and she was responsible for changing his life. She constantly told him that he would be playing baseball again one day with a reassuring confidence. She fed him all the food he could handle and gave him a place to sleep. Josh gained weight rapidly and began thinking that a comeback to baseball was a good possibility; but he had no idea who would want to give a worn-out drug-addict another chance.

Hamilton found his answer in a religious baseball group that forced him to perform janitorial chores during the day in order to gain field and batting cage practice in the evenings. He noticed that he still had an amazing swing and with weight training he was back into top shape in no time.

Josh knew the right people in the right places at the right time, and was called upon by the Cincinnati Red's major league organization. He made an impact right away, but was eventually traded to the Texas Rangers. While in the Ranger's organization, he began to start every game and made the All-Star Team. He proved that he had his swing all along; he just needed a push in the right direction to realize his true potential.

One thing to take away from Beyond Belief is that family is the most important thing a person will ever have. Sometimes you may not notice it, but it is easy to be lost in the world without family and the assurance that someone is there for you. Luckily for Josh Hamilton, his parents and wife stuck with him throughout his entire addiction and recovery process. His wife has proven to be a remarkable woman and his grandmother showed strength that no one else could. This autobiography is an excellent read if you like baseball or not. Hamilton's story is an amazing success story that makes you appreciate family and living a healthy life. This book is rated an easy 5 out of 5.

Black History Month Speaker Empowerment Principles to Live Like a King

!: Black History Month Speaker Empowerment Principles to Live Like a King

Live like a King! Remember, honor, and prophetically be guided into the future by the outstanding legacy of the King family. Had not Africans arisen to confront injustice in America, there would be no human or civil rights in this country.

Capture the greatness of African American civil rights leaders and impart their spirit today in the hearts of a new culture. Let us once again properly identify with their struggle. For me my personal history and interaction with Africans is rather unusual as I as a white man have been numerous times to Africa. The 8 countries I have spoken to audiences in are the impoverished war-torn nations of East Africa.

We must honestly acknowledge the historical atrocities at the hands of white supremacists and the nations they duped into following their ideology. Unlike many white speakers and ministers who go through Africa, I encouraged my African brothers to not emulate white men in their dress, but rather be authentic in their individuality. I tell my African friends: "You were born an original. Do not die a copy."

I personally deeply love and identify with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his family. In fact I had the privilege of meeting his daughter Bernice King in Southern California, when she spoke on great expectations for the future. The King family was spied on by the FBI for 4 years after the assassination of Rev. King the great Civil Rights leader.

The King family's forward struggle and refusal to yield our universal human rights should be an inspiration to us all. Even when faced with personal danger, threats, violence, and death they boldly carried on full force to overthrow injustice and the farce of government that claimed to represent we the people. The King family peaceably achieved reformation taking America out of the Dark Ages and one step closer into the light. Let us continue the fight for freedom lest we lose what Dr. King accomplished for us.

History curiously repeats itself. While America bombed and burned Vietnam with napalm, Hoover's FBI was assassinating civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King and Fred Hampton of the Black Panther Party. Today the ATF kills women & children and burns & bulldozes churches (Waco, TX). Police brutalize WTO peaceful protestors on Seattle's streets. NYPD murder African Americans celebrating a bachelor party. Eight Florida boot camp workers punch, kick, and kill a 14-year-old African American boy and are acquitted of manslaughter. Is this democracy and the kind of America Dr. King gave his life for?

Unless we as a people continue to stand up to injustice, the freedoms our forefathers fought for shall be lost as America becomes a police state to serve the military-industrial complex. No government for the profiteers can also be for the people. Nevertheless what we tolerate will continue to dominate. Therefore it is time for us to arise, raise the standard, and take a stand to redeem the homeland.

The White House could use some color to again feel, get real, and heal the homeland.

African Americans have always led the way and been at the tip of the spear to pierce through evil and injustice. In this hour more than ever, African Americans must fight for people of every color who are being exploited and disenfranchized. The voice of African Americans must be heard throughout our land!

Interacting with the victims of genocide in war-torn Rwanda and Burundi (East Africa) where 1.2 million brothers divided and killed one another had a deep effect upon me. My travels deep into "the bush" of Africa (Malawi and Mozambique) where villagers had never before seen a white man, provided me a wonderful cross-cultural experience and the chance to experience being a minority myself.

When times get tough, we must ask ourselves:

Are you a thermometer or a thermostat?

Are you a mover and a shaker, or being moved and shaken?

Are you part of the problem, or part of the solution?

Are you living and loving fearlessly?

What are you living for and for what will you be remembered?

Is what you are living for, worth dying for?

Do you have a dream? Are you daily moving toward making it a reality or is it merely a fantasy?

What you refuse to confront, you can never correct.

What you tolerate, will continue to dominate.

You don't need a high IQ, if you have a strong "I will" and unflinching determination.

It's time we know ourselves by the spirit and the content of our character, rather than the color and shade of our skin. When we arise within and stop being distracted with conversations of color, we shall truly show the world what it is to transcend racial prejudice and live powerfully.

This Black History Month don't just celebrate and reflect upon the courageous journey toward liberty and equality embarked upon by African Americans of the past. Let us recommit ourselves to the continued pursuit of freedom and equality for all.

African Americans represent every aspect of this country's heritage and hope. Only with the involvement and leadership of African Americans can this country truly unite and achieve civil, social, and economic justice for all.

Stress Management - Coping With Anger

!: Stress Management - Coping With Anger

When you're stressed can anger be far behind? Have you ever been angry I mean really angry about something that happened. The car won't start, another project lands on your desk at work, your spouse has to work on Saturday once again and you have to cancel the trip to the beach with the kids. This flash of anger generally means you're dealing with some acute episode that's happening right now. When emotions intensify they feed on one another. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. As you think to yourself how angry you are you actually become even more angry. Anger causes both physical symptoms and emotions that are almost always somewhat distorted.

How do you feel when you get angry?

Recognize the physical symptoms of anger

- A tight jaw

- Knot in the pit of your stomach

- Heartburn

- Diarrhea

- Heart palpitations

- Headache

- Shallow breathing

Recognize your anger triggers thought distortions

Blaming - the belief that others are to blame for the situation
Overgeneration - they're never home on Saturday or we always have to cancel our trips. Trigger words are "always," "all," "every."
Magnifying - using words that magnify the situation . They're the worst person I ever met. The situation was unbearable. As you exaggerate the situation it makes you feel worse.
Global labels - labels we put on people including ourselves. This distortion includes "jerk," "selfish pig," "loser."

One way to get control over your emotions is to first recognize you are dealing with situations that triggers your anger sort out the circumstance and figure out specifically what's may be causing the trigger. You can find healthy ways to cope with anger triggers and thought distortions. Coping is anything you do to relieve the unsettling effects of stress.

- Blaming others only makes you feel helpless. Remind yourself that they're probably doing the best that they can.
- Overgeneration revise the term that you use like always, all, every. Use specific and accurate descriptions
- Magnifying - ask yourself is it really that bad. Use very accurate language
- Global be specific and describe the behavior or situation and not the person.

You can best take care of yourself by coping with the situation. What you say or do about the situation will either help you diffuse the situation or cause you to "blow up." Coping give you the power to choose how you react Take back your power and make healthy coping choices a part of your life.

And I'd like to invite you to find even more healthy coping skills.
